Celebrating 30 Years of “Horizon” – A Milestone in South African Rock History!

Horizon
Steve Louw's iconic album "Horizon" celebrated its 30th anniversary in July 2025, marking a pivotal moment in South African rock with timeless tracks and award-winning excellence.

Can you believe it’s been THREE DECADES since Steve Louw blessed us with his incredible album “Horizon”? That’s right – July 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of this absolute gem that helped define South African rock in the mid-90s!

A Journey to the Stars

Released in July 1995 by Polygram, “Horizon” wasn’t just another album – it was a statement. Steve Louw, the creative force behind Big Sky (and former frontman of the legendary All Night Radio), took his vision all the way to Los Angeles to work with producer Shelly Yakus, who had already worked magic with U2, Dire Straits, and Tom Petty. Talk about good company!

The result? Pure rock ‘n roll gold that captured the unique spirit of South African life while delivering that universal, leather-and-denim, open-road sound we all love.

The Songs That Defined a Generation

Who could forget those incredible tracks that dominated the airwaves? “One Cut With A Knife,” “Strange Room,” and “Kathleen” became instant classics, with their hooks so strong they’re still getting radio play today! The album perfectly balanced raw rock energy with thoughtful songwriting – from the emotional depth of “One Cut With A Knife” to the dreamy escapism of “Run To Me.”

And let’s not forget Steve’s bold take on Tom Waits’ “San Diego Serenade” – showing he wasn’t afraid to tackle the masters while making it completely his own.

Award-Winning Excellence

The music industry took notice too! At the 1996 FNB South African Music Awards, “Horizon” snagged not one but TWO major awards – Best Pop Music Performance AND Best Rock Album. Steve Louw was officially crowned the “Best Rock Act” of 1996, and honestly, listening to this album today, it’s easy to see why.

The Sound of Wide Open Spaces

What made “Horizon” so special was how it captured that feeling of endless possibility – like standing on a cliff with the wind in your hair, looking out at an infinite landscape. The album cover said it all: a guitarist leaping into the sky, taking us all along for the ride.

Critics at the time called it “slick, epic, made-for-big-screen stuff,” and they weren’t wrong. This was South African rock with international ambitions and the talent to back it up.

In 1996, Big Sky won the FNB Music Award for “Best SA Rock Act” for the album Horizon. This album set a new standard for SA rock albums and sold over 10,000 copies

Still Cruising the Airwaves

Thirty years later, these songs haven’t lost their power. They still make you want to hit the open road, turn up the volume, and sing along at the top of your lungs. Whether you discovered “Horizon” back in ’95 or you’re hearing it for the first time today, this album proves that great rock music is truly timeless.

So here’s to Steve Louw and “Horizon” – thirty years of inspiring us to dream bigger, rock harder, and always keep our eyes on that distant horizon. Thanks for the memories, the music, and the reminder that sometimes the best journeys are the ones that take us beyond what we thought was possible.

Rock on! 🤘
