Today marks a milestone worth celebrating – exactly one year since South African blues-rock legend Steve Louw released his ambitious double album “Between Time.” What started as a deeply personal musical journey has evolved into what critics have called a genuine masterpiece.
A Year of Recognition
Released on 6 September 2024, “Between Time” arrived with the full weight of expectation and delivered beyond all measure. Produced by the legendary Kevin Shirley (known for his work with Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, and Joe Bonamassa), the 20-track double album showcased Louw’s remarkable ability to weave together intimate storytelling with expansive musical landscapes.
Chris O’Connor of Rockposer captured the sentiment perfectly: “I genuinely cannot recommend this masterpiece of an album to you highly enough – in every way that counts, it absolutely qualifies as a Magnum Opus.”
The Power of Collaboration
What makes “Between Time” particularly special is its showcase of musical brotherhood. The core band – featuring Doug Lancio, Kevin McKendree, Alison Prestwood, and Greg Morrow – created the perfect foundation for Louw’s acoustic guitar and distinctive vocals.
The guest appearances elevate the album to legendary status. Jim Moginie’s contribution to “Giants Walk The Land” brought Midnight Oil wisdom to Louw’s environmental anthem, while Joe Bonamassa’s lead guitar work on “Cruel Hand of Fate” demonstrated their undeniable musical chemistry across multiple album collaborations.
Songs That Resonate
The album’s tracklist reads like a journey through the human experience. “Giants Walk The Land,” Louw’s powerful love song to Earth, arrived when environmental consciousness has never been more urgent. The haunting “Killers,” inspired by intercepted radio chatter from the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, channels helplessness and rage into something spiritually powerful.
“Streets of Rain,” featuring Lachy Doley’s masterful Hammond organ work, explores loss with profound beauty. As Louw explains, “It’s a song about loss, although our pain is personal, you are not alone.”
Global Impact
The past twelve months have seen “Between Time” reach audiences worldwide. From Americana Highways to Blues Matters Magazine, from Classic Rock to Record Collector, the album has garnered international acclaim. The music found its way onto Joe Bonamassa’s “Cutting Edge Blues” playlist and received coverage across continents, speaking to the universal themes Louw explores.
Bob Ludwig, the 14-time Grammy Award-winning mastering engineer, summed it up perfectly: “Between Time came out wonderfully. I truly love the album.”
A Living Legacy
“Between Time” continues to live beyond its recorded form. The songs have become part of live performances, each rendition adding new layers of meaning. The album reminds us why music matters, why collaboration creates magic, and why some albums transcend their moment to become lasting treasures.
As we mark this anniversary, there’s no better way to celebrate than with live music. Steve Louw will be performing at Daisy Jones Bar on 13 September, bringing these beloved songs to life in an intimate setting where the magic of “Between Time” can be experienced as it was meant to be – shared between artist and audience in the moment.
Steve Louw & Big Sky perform at “Further On Up The Road” on Saturday, 13 September at Daisy Jones, Summerhill Wines, Stellenbosch. Doors open at 17:00. Tickets available at https://qkt.io/TFAbm6
