Big Sky Horizon: Award-Winning South African Rock Album

Horizon

Big Sky’s 1995 album, Horizon, is a road trip companion waiting to be unleashed. Originally released in July 1995, this collection of songs by Steve Louw blends classic rock influences with a uniquely South African twist.

In 1996, Big Sky won the FNB Music Award for “Best SA Rock Act” for the album Horizon. This album set a new standard for SA rock albums and sold over 10,000 copies

Award-Winning Rock with a Message

Horizon wasn’t just commercially successful, it was critically acclaimed. The album won Steve Louw the 1996 FNB Music Award for Best Rock Album, and songs like “One Cut With a Knife” and “Strange Room” became radio staples.

Tracks to Look Out For

One Cut With a Knife: This catchy, hook-driven song tackles the serious issue of self-esteem loss in abusive relationships.

Strange Room: A standout track, “Strange Room” tells the story of a South African in New York City, referencing Sting and capturing the experience of being an outsider.

Kathleen: Another radio favourite, this ballad showcases Louw’s songwriting skills.

International Influences, Local Heart

Horizon was produced in Los Angeles with renowned producer Shelly Yakus (U2, Dire Straits, Tom Petty). Despite the international polish, the album retains its South African soul. Louw’s lyrics paint vivid pictures, and the music is described as a blend of rock, blues, and country.

Is Horizon for You?

If you’re looking for a rock album with catchy tunes, relatable lyrics, and a touch of South African flavour, then Big Sky’s Horizon is definitely worth checking out. Whether you’re cruising down the open road or escaping the office grind, Horizon is a great companion.
